Attend: Fiona Woolf Lecture 2021 – The gender pay gap – mind the gap. Review and reflection

The Law Society’s gender programme supported by the Women Lawyers Division (WLD) seeks to raise awareness of important gender issues and highlight the positive contribution that women make in the profession. Although women make up 52% of the profession, there are large pay disparities between genders.

When the Law Society conducted the largest international survey of women in law in 2018, with 7,781 participants the study found that while 60% were aware of a pay gap problem in their workplace, only 16% reported seeing anything being actively done about it. 74% of men said there was progress regarding the difference in pay between the genders, but only 48% of women agreed with that statement.

Fast forward three years and in spite of the political weight of the Government gender pay reporting directive, pay disparities have only marginally narrowed. With our distinguished panel of speakers this event will look at the challenges associated with achieving pay parity, share examples of good practise and discuss what lessons can be learnt as firms/legal organisations look at extending pay gap reporting to other protected characteristics.
