South Asian Heritage Month (SAHM) exists to commemorate, educate, and celebrate South Asian history and culture, as well as to better understand the diverse heritage that continues to link the UK and South Asia. It was launched in the House of Commons in July 2019.
The Law Society is committed to a profession that is diverse and inclusive; and is delighted to support and promote this important occasion in the diversity calendar for the first time
The event will celebrate the achievements of Asian lawyers who have achieved the accolade of being the first and broken barriers in the judiciary and legal leadership roles. SAHM has an educational role, and the aim of the event is to raise awareness to the wider legal community to the importance and impact of South Asians lawyers in the profession. The educational element of SAHM will be provided by Professor Khaitan head of Human Rights at Oxford University who will set the scene and provide context on the evolution of South Asians in British society. Lubna Shuja who will become the first Law Society president of SA heritage in October 2022 is the guest speaker and will kick off the theme of breaking the barrier. Following Lubna we have a distinguished line up of speakers of who have achieved the status of being the first. Sir Rabinder Singh – first South Asian lawyer to become a high court judge; and Sunil Sheth first South Asian lawyer to become senior partner of a large city firm.
