Law.com International reports that Baker McKenzie’s London office is launching a mentoring programme to encourage social mobility among its trainees, associates and support staff.
The new initiative, dubbed Mentoring Circles, aims to support employees from less privileged and more diverse social backgrounds as they navigate their careers at the firm.
The initiative has come about from feedback attained from lawyers and employees from more socio-economically diverse and less privileged backgrounds, and will be officially launched in the London office in June.
There will be a circle for each group: trainees, associates, and business and secretarial staff. Each circle will have about eight mentees and two mentors. One mentor will be from a more socio-economically diverse background, and one mentor will not.
Mentors and mentees will remain in the same circle for a 12-month period and will meet around six times over the course of the year. All participants will be asked to complete an evaluation form at the beginning, middle and end of the 12-month period, while mentors will report feedback to a steering committee to implement any necessary action.
The firm hopes to enable senior leaders to identify and better understand the potential barriers to retention and progression faced by some employees, and to develop solutions.
