October is Black History Month. It is a month-long celebration of the diversity and heritage of Black people within the UK. This year’s theme is “Saluting Our Sisters”.
The theme of ‘Saluting our Sisters’ highlights the crucial role that black women have played in shaping history, inspiring change, and building communities. This year’s celebration will showcase pioneering black women who have made remarkable contributions to literature, music, fashion, sport, business, politics, academia, social and health care, and more.
It’s not just a month to celebrate the continued achievements and contributions of Black people to the UK and around the world. It’s also a time for continued action to tackle racism, reclaim Black history, and ensure Black history is represented and celebrated all year round.
The aims of Black History Month are to:
- promote knowledge and understanding of Black History and culture,
- acknowledge and celebrate the contributions made by Black people to the cultural and economic development of the UK
