An ally is someone who is not a member of an underrepresented group but who takes action to support that group to help make their workplace more diverse and inclusive for all.
For workplaces to become truly inclusive it is up to people who hold positions of privilege to be active allies and to take responsibility for making changes that will help others be successful.
Allies at all levels can take action with simple, everyday efforts that make a real difference and in this series, we highlight some things that you can do to be an ally and to support your colleagues from underrepresented groups.
#10: 5 key things men can do to help prevent sexual and gender-based violence.
We know that this list is not exhaustive but these 5 things are a great way to get started or do more than you are already doing.
01 Listen
Listen to women. Violence against women and marginalised genders is systemic and happens everyday. If someone is sharing their experience or having a conversation- don’t asked for the stats or evidence, don’t challenge or question – just listen.
02. Educate
Take the time to read and educate yourself. There are lots of books, articles, podcasts and other resources out there on gender equaity and violence prevention.
03 Engage with Organisations and Networks
Engage with local (or national) networks and organisations that help promote gender equality and violence prevention. These might be local community networks or in the workplace.
04 Speak up
Men should help support women by speaking up and speaking out. In particular, men can be allies by speaking with other men. However, you should always be mindful that you are not speaking for or silence the women around. Instead you should be empowering them, supporting them and challenging unacceptable behaviour by others.
05 Understand what you need to change
All men live in a society that is violent against women, girls and marginalised genders. All men have a responsibility to interrupt and challenge any disrespect or disregard for women. All men have a responsibility to be a role model by demonstrating respect towards women and work to improve culture and attitudes.
