An ally is someone who is not a member of an underrepresented group but who takes action to support that group to help make their workplace more diverse and inclusive for all.
For workplaces to become truly inclusive it is up to people who hold positions of privilege to be active allies and to take responsibility for making changes that will help others be successful.
Allies at all levels can take action with simple, everyday efforts that make a real difference and in this series, we highlight some things that you can do to be an ally and to support your colleagues from underrepresented groups.
#30: Build Numbers
Focus on building numbers. To make real change we need support from all. Invite colleagues to join you in support you in your actions. Talk about what action you are doing, share knowledge and resources and invite them join your efforts as an ally. For example, this might include getting them to join ED&I discussions and conversations in the workplace, it might include getting them to support a particular campaign or initiative. It might be getting them to read a particular book or listen to a podcast.
Whatever it is – bringing everyone on side to support the fight for equality is a great way to be an ally.
Equal rights for others does not mean less rights for you.
