An ally is someone who is not a member of an underrepresented group but who takes action to support that group to help make their workplace more diverse and inclusive for all.
For workplaces to become truly inclusive it is up to people who hold positions of privilege to be active allies and to take responsibility for making changes that will help others be successful.
Allies at all levels can take action with simple, everyday efforts that make a real difference and in this series, we highlight some things that you can do to be an ally and to support your colleagues from underrepresented groups.
#39: Celebrate Black History Month?
October is Black History Month in the UK. Here are some ways that you can support and celebrate Black History Month this month:
- Raise money for charity – raise money for a charity that is dedicated to helping people of Black or ethnic minority backgrounds. Charities that you might want to support include: Stop Hate UK, UK Black Pride, Black Minds Matter, Black Lives Matter UK.
- Commit (or re-commit) to creating an inclusive workplace – this month provides an opportunity to reconfirm your commitments on race equality.
- Host a Black History Month Event – put together a panel of employees and/or a senior leaders to share their stories for a Black History Month Event. Alternatively, why not ask a motivational speaker to give a talk to inspire your staff.
