An ally is someone who is not a member of an underrepresented group but who takes action to support that group to help make their workplace more diverse and inclusive for all.
For workplaces to become truly inclusive it is up to people who hold positions of privilege to be active allies and to take responsibility for making changes that will help others be successful.
Allies at all levels can take action with simple, everyday efforts that make a real difference and in this series, we highlight some things that you can do to be an ally and to support your colleagues from underrepresented groups.
#41: Tips for Supporting a Colleague through Menopause
Today is World Menopause Day, so we are sharing some ways that you can support a colleague through menopause:
If you are a Manager/Supervisor/Team Leader
- organise a meeting to see what reasonable adjustments can be made to their schedule, workload or environment.
- Signpost them to support offered by the firm – such as a Menopause Champion, firm resources and policies and any medical support such as private medical and/or wellbeing support.
- Demonstrate empathy by actively listening and reassuring the person that what they are experiencing is normal and commonly associated with the menopause.
- Agree on a regular review time to check in and see how well these adjustments are going.
- Consider having menopause awareness workshops and collective events so those transitioning through menopause feel heard and able to talk about their experiences.
