An ally is someone who is not a member of an underrepresented group but who takes action to support that group to help make their workplace more diverse and inclusive for all.
For workplaces to become truly inclusive it is up to people who hold positions of privilege to be active allies and to take responsibility for making changes that will help others be successful.
Allies at all levels can take action with simple, everyday efforts that make a real difference and in this series, we highlight some things that you can do to be an ally and to support your colleagues from underrepresented groups.
#59: Provide non-alcoholic drinks at work events
It sounds simple but providing non-alcoholic drinks at events or in the workplace can help to create an inclusive and welcoming environment for those who do not drink alcohol for personal, cultural, or medical reasons. It can also support a healthy and responsible approach to alcohol consumption, as well as promoting a culture of moderation and inclusivity. Providing non-alcoholic options can also be beneficial for designated drivers, pregnant women, and individuals who are in recovery from alcohol addiction.
By offering a variety of non-alcoholic drinks, such as water, juice, soda, or tea, employers can ensure that all employees feel included and able to participate in social events or business meetings without feeling pressured to drink alcohol.
If you are organising or hosting a special event or party and serving cocktails or welcome drinks, make sure that there are equivalent non-alcoholic drinks being served. Not just some tap water on the side. Additionally, if you are organising or hosting make sure that everyone’s needs are catered for, if you know there are people with specific requirements, much in the same way as you would deal with with dietary requirements or allergies.
