How to be an Ally #61: Ask for Feedback (and follow up)

An ally is someone who is not a member of an underrepresented group but who takes action to support that group to help make their workplace more diverse and inclusive for all.

For workplaces to become truly inclusive it is up to people who hold positions of privilege to be active allies and to take responsibility for making changes that will help others be successful.

Allies at all levels can take action with simple, everyday efforts that make a real difference and in this series, we highlight some things that you can do to be an ally and to support your colleagues from underrepresented groups.

#61: Ask for Feedback (and follow up)

Workplace or Pulse surveys can be an effective way to gather data and insights on diversity and inclusion within a firm. These surveys can help identify areas of strength and areas where improvements can be made. They can be done at firm level generally about diversity and inclusion or with small groups or networks.

Some potential questions to include in a diversity and inclusion survey might include:

  • Do you feel included and valued in your workplace?
  • Have you experienced any discrimination or bias at work?
  • Do you feel that your workplace is inclusive and welcoming to people of all backgrounds and identities?
  • Do you feel that your workplace leadership is committed to diversity and inclusion?
  • Do you feel that you have equal opportunities for growth and advancement in your workplace, regardless of your background or identity?
  • Do you feel that the form values the contribution of employees regardless of race or ethnicity
  • Do you feel that the leaders champion diversity
  • Do you feel that your firm values and respects individual difference

It’s important to keep in mind that the specific questions included in a diversity and inclusion survey will depend on the specific goals and needs of the firm. It may be helpful to work with a consultant or HR professional to design and implement an effective survey. You should also regularly review the questions being asked.

Carrying out the survey is only part of the story. It is important to then review/analysis the data and take actions based on the outcomes and/or feedback. Be sure to follow up on the results of the survey and take action to address any issues or areas for improvement that are identified and communicate what you are doing.
