An ally is someone who is not a member of an underrepresented group but who takes action to support that group to help make their workplace more diverse and inclusive for all.
For workplaces to become truly inclusive it is up to people who hold positions of privilege to be active allies and to take responsibility for making changes that will help others be successful.
Allies at all levels can take action with simple, everyday efforts that make a real difference and in this series, we highlight some things that you can do to be an ally and to support your colleagues from underrepresented groups.
#62: Ensure there is a permanent feedback loop
It is not enough to just have a single survey. It is important to have a permanent feedback loop in place to ensure that diversity and inclusion efforts are ongoing and effective. This can be achieved through regular surveys or focus groups, as well as ongoing communication channels where employees can provide feedback and suggest improvements. Employee networks and employee check-ins can also be used to ensure that there is a permanent feedback loop.
As before, it is also important to follow up on this feedback and take action to address any issues or concerns that are raised. By regularly requesting and acting on feedback, employers can ensure that their diversity and inclusion efforts are responsive to the needs and experiences of their employees.
