An ally is someone who is not a member of an underrepresented group but who takes action to support that group to help make their workplace more diverse and inclusive for all.
For workplaces to become truly inclusive it is up to people who hold positions of privilege to be active allies and to take responsibility for making changes that will help others be successful.
Allies at all levels can take action with simple, everyday efforts that make a real difference and in this series, we highlight some things that you can do to be an ally and to support your colleagues from underrepresented groups.
IWD: Sign up to the Women in Law Pledge
This week we are looking at some things that you can do for International Women’s Day to commit to creating lasting change for women solicitors in the workplace.
One way that firms can be an ally is to sign up to (whatever their size) to the Law Society’s Women in Law Pledge, which requires signatories to commit to senior level accountability for progressing gender equality.
By signing up for the pledge, you or your organisation is committing to:
- supporting the progression of women into senior roles in the profession by focusing on retention and promotion opportunities
- setting clear plans and targets around gender equality and diversity for your organisation.
To commit to the pledge, download and complete the form on the Law Society Website.
