An ally is someone who is not a member of an underrepresented group but who takes action to support that group to help make their workplace more diverse and inclusive for all.
For workplaces to become truly inclusive it is up to people who hold positions of privilege to be active allies and to take responsibility for making changes that will help others be successful.
Allies at all levels can take action with simple, everyday efforts that make a real difference and in this series, we highlight some things that you can do to be an ally and to support your colleagues from underrepresented groups.
Support Black Businesses
You should support a diverse range of businesses all year round. However, since it is Black History Month, why not take a moment to review your list of preferred suppliers and ensure that your list of suppliers is diverse and includes black businesses.
If you are hosting any events this month, why not include some additional black suppliers this month and ask your employees for recommendations. This might include local restaurants, food trucks and caterers, black-owned venues for hosting your events, products made and/or designed by local black-owned businesses.
Create a list of recommendations to share with your employees (and update your preferred supplier list).
