An ally is someone who is not a member of an underrepresented group but who takes action to support that group to help make their workplace more diverse and inclusive for all.
For workplaces to become truly inclusive it is up to people who hold positions of privilege to be active allies and to take responsibility for making changes that will help others be successful.
Allies at all levels can take action with simple, everyday efforts that make a real difference and in this series, we highlight some things that you can do to be an ally and to support your colleagues from underrepresented groups.
IWD: Support women solicitors all year round (not just on International Women’s Day)
This week we are looking at some things that you can do for International Women’s Day to commit to creating lasting change for women solicitors in the workplace.
Commit to supporting your women employees all year round – not just on International Women’s Day. You should support and celebrate the women in your firm all year round.
Don’t just create opportunities for women or highlight their achievements, just because it is IWD – do it all the time!
Are you writing content to highlight a female employee for IWD? Have a programme of celebrating and highlighting your colleagues at all times of the year. Both internal and externally!
Holding a panel event? That’s great, but continue the conversation after the event and create action points and commit to making any necessary changes, don’t wait another year to realise your have not done anything about the issues raised.
