GQUAL is a campaign for gender parity in international representation, including international courts, tribunal and other monitoring or adjudicating bodies that play key roles in developing international law, human rights and international relations.

About

The GQUAL Campaign aspires for gender parity in international representation. It has since been signed by more than 1,500 people from across the world, including former and current members of international courts, prominent academics, activists, lawyers, human rights defenders, judges, public officials.

According to the GQUAL website the data compiled by GQUAL shows that the under-representation of women affects most courts, adjudicatory bodies, and international agencies charged with applying, interpreting, and creating international law.

GQUAL monitors the composition of 88 international bodies representing a total of 583 positions. Currently only 37% are occupied by women. This percentage is even lower if we do not count the bodies typically associated with women’s issues, such as the United Nations Committee on the Elimination of Discrimination against Women, the United Nations Working Group on Discrimination against Women and the United Nations Committee on the Rights of the Child.
