Islamophobia Awareness Month (IAM) is a campaign founded in 2012 by a group of Muslim organisations. It aims to showcase the positive contributions of Muslims as well as raise awareness of Islamophobia in society.
The Theme for 2023 is #MuslimStories. The goal of this year’s campaign is to facilitate connections among individuals from diverse backgrounds, including both Muslims and non-Muslims, using the transformative power of storytelling. Everyone has a story to tell. It can be based on their own experiences or those of someone they admire. So, let’s take part by sharing your stories and sparking meaningful and engaging conversations!
What is Islamophobia?
Islamophobia refers to the unfounded fear or prejudice towards Islam and those who practise it. This form of discrimination can range from direct acts of hatred to more subtle, ingrained prejudices that can be just as damaging. It is not uncommon for Muslims to be victims of unprovoked attacks.
Everyone can all play a part in fighting Islamophobia:
- Learn More: Take the time to learn about Islam through books, documentaries, and conversations.
- Speak Out: If you hear an Islamophobic comment, challenge it.
- Make Connections: Get to know Muslims in your community and workplace and listen to their stories.
- Self-Reflection: Be honest about your own biases and work on changing them.
Islamophobia Awareness Month is a prompt for us all to take real action.
