SQE: ‘Good start’: 53% pass first SQE assessment

The Law Society Gazette has reported that the SRA has published that just over half of the candidates who took the first ever SQE exam have passed. As the SQE was originally considered to be the solution to making the profession more diverse it is interesting to see the following key stats that have been highlighted:

  • There was no difference between the pass rates of men and women.
  • Performance of those who went to state and private schools were broadly similar.
  • Pass rates were significantly higher for white candidates – 66% compared with 43% for Asian candidates and 39% for black candidates.

For comparison purposes the SRA provided LPC completion rates for 2019/2020: 65% for white candidates, 52% for Asian candidates and 39% for black candidates.
