How to be an Ally #60: Provide all gender-friendly bathrooms and accessible bathrooms for your employees to use

An ally is someone who is not a member of an underrepresented group but who takes action to support that group to help make their workplace more diverse and inclusive for all.

For workplaces to become truly inclusive it is up to people who hold positions of privilege to be active allies and to take responsibility for making changes that will help others be successful.

Allies at all levels can take action with simple, everyday efforts that make a real difference and in this series, we highlight some things that you can do to be an ally and to support your colleagues from underrepresented groups.

#60: Provide all gender-friendly bathrooms and accessible bathrooms for your employees to use

All-gender restrooms provide a safe and private space for individuals who do not identify as a specific gender, while accessible restrooms accommodate disabled individuals who may have specific needs in terms of bathroom facilities.

By providing these options, employers can show their commitment to inclusivity and respect for the diverse needs of their workforce. It is also important to ensure that these bathrooms are well-maintained and properly equipped to meet the needs of all employees.

While bathrooms may be out of your control if you are a tenant in a building with shared facilities or in an old or listed buildings but it is important to have bathroom facilities are on your agenda so that you can make changes or improvements when you can. Additionally, if you are moving premises or refurbishing existing premises, make sure bathroom facilities are taken into account.
